Director Mike Ott comes back with Pearblossom Hwy, a broody drama that takes place in the bleak northern stretches of Los Angeles County. It provides the right atmosphere for this exploration of high-desert angst.

Pearblossom Hwy is made for the small-scale niche and will likely make the rounds of film festivals. It is premiered at the AFI Fest?s Young Americans section. The three characters in the movie go on a road trip to San Francisco.

The movie starts in the flats of Lancaster. Cory Zacharia and Atsuko Okatsuka play Cory and Anna, friends who are desperate to escape. It features shoots from Cory?s video journal that is taken from his flip camera.

You can get a sense of indulgence from Cory?s recordings as it serves as an audition tape for a reality show. He is convinced that getting a slot in the Young Life will lead him to his life purpose and lift him from his current state. He also sings lyrics about anarchy as the singer of a band.

Beautiful Anna is still and silent, which is opposite to Cory?s rambling and restlessness. She wants to return to Japan to visit her ailing grandmother. She engages in prostitution in order to save up for the trip. She tries to endure the encounters in highway motels and becomes indifferent towards her citizenship test. The only time she smiles is when Cory and his older brother Jeff (John Brotherton) live harmoniously with each other. Jeff is the one who arranges the road trip to San Francisco with Cory and Anna in order to visit their father (Stephen Tobolowsky) to show his brother that the father is a bigger screw-up than him.

And just as Pearblossom Hwy is starting to tackle interesting ideas, it ends. Anna sees herself on the outside looking in.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs in Beverly Hills auto crash

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Sean "Diddy" Combs was a passenger in an SUV that was hit by another car in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel, but the hip-hop and fashion mogul was not taken to a hospital.

Beverly Hills police Lt. Lincoln Hoshino said Combs was riding in a Cadillac Escalade on Sunset Boulevard Wednesday when a Lexus sedan turned left in front of it, and the vehicles collided.

Hoshino says Combs complained of pain, but said he would seek his own medical attention. No one from either vehicle was hospitalized.

A phone message left for Combs' publicist was not immediately returned, and Combs made no mention of the crash on his often-updated Twitter account.

Photos posted on celebrity website TMZ showed the Escalade's bumper badly smashed and Combs lying on grass after the crash.

Obama tackles rape comments, "fiscal cliff" on TV talk show

BURBANK, California (Reuters) - President Barack Obama suspended the levity during an interview with late-night TV talk show host Jay Leno on Wednesday to address a Republican Senate candidate's assertion that pregnancies resulting from rape are intended by God and to express confidence that Washington could soon address the looming "fiscal cliff."

"I don't know how these guys come up with these ideas. Let me make a very simple proposition: rape is rape. It is a crime," Obama said on NBC's "The Tonight Show."

"This is exactly why you don't want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women's healthcare."

Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's comments that pregnancies caused by rape are "something God intended to happen" echoed across the U.S. media and sent ripples through political circles ahead of the November 6 election.

The Obama campaign, which enjoys leads among women voters in many election battleground states, sought swiftly to connect Mourdock with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. This summer Romney had to distance himself from remarks by another Republican Senate candidate, Todd Akin of Missouri, about what he called "legitimate rape."

In an interview full of jokes about marriage, Halloween and other topics, the Democratic president made a few serious comments, mostly about the hottest topic of the election: the economy.

Asked about the so-called fiscal cliff - a combination of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to kick in early next year - Obama said he was confident that a solution could be found before the end of the year.

"Solving this is not that hard. It requires some tough choices," Obama said, adding that some programs had to be cut and tax rates should go up for people making more than $250,000 a year.

"I hope that we can get it done by the end of this year. It just requires some compromise, which shouldn't be a dirty word."

On the economic crisis gripping the European Union, Obama said countries have been "kind of muddling along" and "they didn't respond as quickly as they could."

The United States is working with those nations to make sure they have a credible plan to maintain the unity of Europe, he added.

In a lighter moment, Obama joked about real estate mogul and TV personality Donald Trump, who recently posted a video challenging Obama to release documents about his education.

Trump has persistently questioned whether Obama, a native of Hawaii, was actually born in the United States, and Obama played off Trump's theories about his origins.

"This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama joked. "We had, you know, constant run-ins on the soccer field. He wasn't very good and resented it."

Ex-Goldman exec given 2 years for inside trades

NEW YORK (AP) ? A former Goldman Sachs and Procter & Gamble Co. board member once widely respected worldwide for his business smarts was sentenced Wednesday to 2 years in prison for feeding inside information about board dealings with a billionaire hedge fund owner who was his friend.

Rajat Gupta, 63, of Westport, Conn., was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff, who also ordered him to pay a $5 million fine. The Harvard-educated businessman long respected on Wall Street was one of the biggest catches yet for the federal government in its five-year crackdown on insider trading that has so far resulted in 69 convictions.

Gupta was ordered to report to prison on Jan. 8.

Reading from a statement, he said: "The last 18 months have been the most challenging period of my life since I lost my parents as a teenager.

"I regret terribly the impact of this matter on my family, my friends and the institutions that are dear to me. I've lost my reputation I built for a lifetime. The verdict was devastating."

The dealings by Gupta that were highlighted at his spring trial stemmed from his relationship with Sri Lanka-born Raj Rajaratnam. The one-time billionaire hedge fund boss controlled up to $7 billion in accounts, giving him a firm footprint in the financial markets and influence that impressed someone as widely regarded as Gupta.

"His conduct has forever tarnished a once-sterling reputation that took years to cultivate," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said after sentencing. "We hope that others who might consider breaking the securities laws will take heed from this sad occasion and choose not to follow in Mr. Gupta's footsteps."

Prosecutors described how Gupta raced to telephone Rajaratnam with stock tips sometimes only seconds after getting them from board conference calls, allowing Rajaratnam to make more than $11 million in illegal profits for him and his investors. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence after his conviction at trial last year.

The narrower insider trading case against Rajaratnam and his co-conspirators resulted in 26 convictions and was described by Bharara as the biggest insider trading case in history, successful in part because of unprecedented use of wiretaps more familiar to juries at mob and drug trials.

Prosecutors say Rajaratnam earned up to $75 million illegally through his trades while Gupta's attorneys point out that their client earned no profits.

At trial, Gupta was convicted of three counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy, insider trading charges that prosecutors said should result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The judge said a prison sentence was necessary to send a message to insider traders that "when you get caught, you will go to jail."

Defense attorney Gary Naftalis immediately promised to appeal, telling Rakoff he wants Gupta free pending appealing. The judge did not immediately rule on the request.

Prosecutors accused Gupta, a former chief of the global consulting firm McKinsey & Co. and a onetime director of the huge consumer products company Procter & Gamble, of "above-the-law arrogance" in feeding Rajaratnam inside tips between March 2007 and January 2009.

Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein testified at trial that Gupta appeared to have violated the investment bank's confidentiality policies.

"Gupta's crimes are shocking," the government wrote. "Gupta's crimes are extraordinarily serious and damaging to the capital markets. ... It understandably fuels cynicism among the investing public that Wall Street is rigged and that Wall Street professionals unfairly exploit privileged access to information. This is particularly troubling at a time when there is widespread concern about corruption, greed and recklessness at the highest levels of the financial services industry."

In their presentencing brief, defense lawyers cited Gupta's many good deeds worldwide, saying they were unusual enough to warrant a sentence of probation with instructions to perform community service.

Naftalis told the judge that Gupta had "one of the best reputations on the planet. His loss of reputation is severely strong punishment."

The defense noted that the Rwandan government supported a program in which Gupta would work with rural districts to fight HIV, malaria and extreme poverty and to help provide food security. The lawyers said the Rwandan government would join with a U.S.-based organization already working in the country to ensure effective supervision of Gupta's service.

They also said prison would spoil the efforts by Gupta, who was born in Kolkata, India, to develop new initiatives, including the Urban Institute of India, meant to bring the private sector, academia and the Indian government together to address accelerating migration to India's cities. The more than 400 letters written to the judge on Gupta's behalf included documents signed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

"The conduct for which he was convicted represents an isolated aberration and a stark departure from this personal history," the lawyers wrote.

At Gupta's trial, which began in May, the government highlighted a Sept. 23, 2008, phone call it said was made from Gupta to Rajaratnam only minutes after Gupta had learned during a confidential conference call about Warren Buffett's planned investment through Berkshire Hathaway of $5 billion in Goldman.

Moments after the phone call ended at 3:55 p.m., Rajaratnam purchased $40 million in Goldman stock ? an 11th hour trade that ended up making him nearly $1 million ? at the height of the financial crisis that had engulfed the country.

In another recorded phone call in 2008, Rajaratnam told one of his traders that he had got a tip "from someone who's on the board of Goldman Sachs" that Goldman was facing an unexpected quarterly loss.

Gupta, prosecutors said, was motivated to help Rajaratnam because he had a financial stake in some of the hedge fund manager's business ventures.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? For most of his 30 years as Pennsylvania's longest-serving U.S. senator and prominent moderate in Congress, Arlen Specter was a Republican, though often at odds with the GOP leadership.

He helped end the Supreme Court hopes of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork, who was nominated by Ronald Reagan. Decades later, he was one of only three Republicans in Congress to vote for President Barack Obama's stimulus.

His breaks with his party were hardly a surprise: He had begun his political career as a Democrat and ended it as one, too.

In between, he was at the heart of several major American political events. He rose to prominence in the 1960s as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory in President John F. Kennedy's assassination. He came to the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980 and was a key voice in the confirmation hearings of both Bork and Clarence Thomas.

Specter died Sunday died at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said his son Shanin. He was 82. Over the years, Specter had fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin lymphoma, overcome a brain tumor and survived cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

Intellectual and stubborn, Specter took the lead on a wide spectrum of issues and was no stranger to controversy.

In one of his last major political acts, Specter startled fellow senators in April 2009 when he announced he was joining the Democrats. He said he was "increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy," though he said the Democrats could not count on him to be "an automatic 60th vote" that would give them a filibuster-proof majority.

He had also concluded that he was unlikely to win a sixth term as a Republican, and his frankness about why he returned to the Democratic Party was packaged in a powerful TV ad by his primary opponent, then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, who hammered away at the incumbent as a political opportunist.

"My change in party will enable me to be re-elected," Specter says in TV news footage used in the ad.

The announcer ends the ad saying, "Arlen Specter changed parties to save one job ? his, not yours."

And Democrats picked Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral, over Specter in the 2010 primary, ending his decades of service. Sestak lost Specter's seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey in the general election by 2 percentage points.

Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and during his time on the Warren Commission.

In 1987, Specter helped thwart Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court, earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such denials as being "borked." But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing "flat-out perjury." The interrogation, televised nationally, incensed women's groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter took credit for helping to defeat President Bill Clinton's national health care plan ? the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward ? and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome, the name given to a collection of symptoms experienced by veterans of the war that include fatigue, memory loss, pain and difficulty sleeping. And following the Iran-Contra scandal, Specter pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA, which later exposed Aldrich Ames as a Soviet spy.

But he was not afraid to buck his fellow Republicans.

As a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Specter pushed for increased funding for stem-cell research, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease, and supported several labor-backed initiatives in a GOP-led Congress. He also doggedly sought federal funds for local projects in his home state.

In 1995, he launched a presidential bid, denouncing religious conservatives as the "fringe" that plays too large a role in setting the party's agenda. Specter, who was Jewish, bowed out before the first primary because of lackluster fundraising.

Specter's irascible independence caught up with him in 2004. He barely survived a GOP primary challenge from Toomey by 17,000 votes of more than 1.4 million cast. He went on to easily win the general election with the help of organized labor, a traditionally Democratic constituency.

Specter was diagnosed in 2005 with stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Announcing the diagnosis with his trademark doggedness, Specter said: "I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents and I'm going to beat this, too."

"Arlen Specter was always a fighter," Obama said in a statement Sunday. "From his days stamping out corruption as a prosecutor in Philadelphia to his three decades of service in the Senate, Arlen was fiercely independent ? never putting party or ideology ahead of the people he was chosen to serve. He brought that same toughness and determination to his personal struggles."

Specter wrote of his illness in a 2008 book, "Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate," saying he wanted to let others facing similar crises "ought to know they are not alone."

Cancer handed him "a stark look at mortality" and an "added sense of humility," Specter told The Associated Press.

Born in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1930, Specter spent summers toiling in his father's junkyard in Russell, Kan., where he knew another future senator ? Bob Dole. The junkyard thrived during World War II, allowing Specter's father to send his four children to college.

Specter left Kansas for college in 1947 because the University of Kansas, where his best friends were headed, did not have Jewish fraternities. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and Yale law school in 1956. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953.

Friends say his childhood circumstances made him determined, tough and independent-minded. Specter considered his father's triumphs the embodiment of the American dream, a fulfillment that friends say drove him to a career in public life.

He entered politics as a Democrat in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, when he was an assistant district attorney who sent six Teamsters officials to jail for union corruption.

Working on the Warren Commission in 1964, Specter was the chief author of the theory that a single bullet had hit both Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally, an assumption critical to the conclusion that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the subject of ridicule in Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."

After working on the Warren Commission, he returned to Philadelphia and challenged his boss, James Crumlish, for district attorney in 1965. Specter ran as a Republican and was derided by Crumlish as "Benedict Arlen." But Crumlish lost to his protege by 36,000 votes.

Specter lost re-election as district attorney in 1973 and went into private practice. Among his most notorious clients as a private attorney was Ira Einhorn, a Philadelphia counterculture celebrity who killed his girlfriend in 1977.

Finally, in 1980, Specter won the Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Richard Schweiker, defeating former Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty.

After leaving the Senate in January 2011, the University of Pennsylvania Law School said Specter would teach a course about Congress' relationship with the Supreme Court, and Maryland Public Television launched a political-affairs show hosted by the former senator.

He also occasionally performed standup comedy at clubs in Philadelphia and New York. He played squash nearly every day into his mid-70s and liked to unwind with a martini or two at night.

A funeral was scheduled for Tuesday in Penn Valley, Pa., and will be open to the public, followed by burial in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

Specter is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons, Shanin and Steve, and four granddaughters.

VitaMedica Video Series Makes Recovery after Plastic Surgery Easy

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

Manhattan Beach, CA ( freepressreleases ) October 11, 2012 ? VitaMedica developed a series of Recovery Products tutorial videos to help patients determine the best recovery nutritional solution for their upcoming plastic surgery procedure. In the videos, Dr. David H. Rahm, medical director and founder of VitaMedica, discusses the importance of nutrition for recovery. He also reviews the use of Arnica for bruising, bromelain for inflammation and vitamins for immune support and wound healing.

In an increasingly competitive employment market, many women and men are resorting to cosmetic surgery to look their best. But with limited vacation days and a high interest in discretion, it?s no surprise that patients want to minimize recovery and downtime.

With internet search rates for plastic surgery preparation and recovery closing in on 90 million per month, it?s clear that patients want to take a proactive approach to improving their recovery time.

So, what are they seeking and finding from all these internet searches?

The most popular searches involve the use of natural homeopathic remedies like Arnica montana for bruising. Other popular searches include the use of bromelain for swelling and nutrients like vitamin C for healing. But, with so much information available on the web, identifying which products work best is a challenge for even the savviest patients.

To address this need, VitaMedica developed four new videos to help patients determine the VitaMedica Recovery product that is best suited for their upcoming plastic surgical or non-surgical procedure. These include Why Recovery Nutraceuticals, Arnica Montana & Bruising, Bromelain & Inflammation and Vitamins & Immune Support. All of the videos can be found in the Learn section of the company website.

In the Recovery introductory video, Dr. Rahm provides patients with basic guidelines for taking nutritional supplements around the time of surgery.

Dr. Rahm, who is a board-certified anesthesiologist says, ?Patients often don?t realize that a number of popular supplements can negatively affect a surgical procedure, or even cause their surgery to be canceled.?

He continues, ?While some supplements may be great for your health long-term they can actually worsen bruising and bleeding or interfere with pharmaceuticals during surgery.? This video helps bring awareness to this issue for patients.

?Providing videos on our website is just an extension of an educational focus that we?ve always had,? says Yvette La-Garde, VitaMedica?s director of education. She continues, ?We already offer a wealth of information on our website including a Recovery Products Quiz which helps patients select the best product for them but video format just makes easier for those who want to learn the information as quickly as possible.?

While not a household name, VitaMedica has offered a line of nutritionally based Recovery Products through plastic surgeons, facial plastics, cosmetic derms and medical spas for over a decade. Many of these practices not only offer a VitaMedica Recovery product as part of the overall price of a procedure but also provide guidance on the best nutraceutical to accompany a patient?s procedure.

But, more recently, the company started offering its Recovery product line directly to patients via their website. This approach is ideal for patients who have heard about the benefits of using VitaMedica but whose doctor does not carry the product line ? typically a non-aesthetic practice. The downside is that these patients need more education about which VitaMedica Recovery product is best suited for their needs.

For a full list of supplements to discontinue around the time of surgery, refer to VitaMedica?s Surgery Supplements Guidelines. For more information on the dietary & lifestyle measures you can take to support healing and speed recovery, see VitaMedica?s Recovery Guidelines.

Since 1997, VitaMedica has offered a targeted line of nutraceuticals for recovery and wellness through aesthetic medical practices including plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, cosmetic dermatologists, medical skin care clinics and medical spas. Top 5 Ways Managers Can Improve ... - Business Management Daily

Performance review meetings can bring anxiety to both sides of the desk. But it doesn?t have to be that way. With the right planning by supervisors, the meeting can be a productive, morale-boosting exchange.

If you?re a manager, here are five steps to help you conduct productive and stress-free reviews:

1. Keep a performance log for every employee?

How many times have you sat down to write a review and can only remember what the person has done the past few weeks. Or you allow only one single incident (good or bad) to color your assessment.

That?s why the best way to prepare for a review is to take notes throughout the year. To do that, keep a performance log for each employee. This can be as simple as notes on a piece of paper or on a Word document. A few key points about performance logs:

  • Include notes on both positive and negative work and behaviors.
  • Avoid making references to protected characteristics ? like race, age or gender.
  • Don?t make assumptions about the reasons for a behavior or work habit ? stick to facts.
  • Assume that the notes could someday be read in court, because they could.

2. Be aware of employee?s main concerns

Employees are understandably anxious before reviews. Here?s a list of some of the top questions they?ll have ? and that you can plan ahead to manage:

  • Does the employee know the expectations he?ll be evaluated on? Were they explained in advance?
  • Will there be any surprises? (Have you been giving the employee feedback during the year?)
  • Will the evaluation be honest and unbiased?
  • Will the manager listen to what the employee says?
  • How does this review affect the employee?s pay?

By being prepared for employee?s questions and concerns, you?ll be better able to handle them.

3. On review day, create the right atmosphere

Your goal is to help the employee feel at ease. So hold the review in a private, neutral environment, such as a small conference room. You want a setting that supports discussion and cooperation ? not confrontation. Sit next to your employee if possible?not across the desk or table.

Schedule the time in advance, with the employee?s input. Avoid meeting during a busy or stressful time for the employee. Don?t squeeze it in between meetings or before lunch. Finally, eliminate all interruptions and focus solely on the review.

4. Cite specific examples of good and bad work

Stay away from broad generalizations. Specifics will help point out exactly what the employee needs to improve on.? Specifics can also help your review stand up later in a legal dispute.

For example, don?t just tell an employee: ?You don?t get your work done on time.?? Instead, say something like, ?Over the past six months, you?ve submitted 6 of your 9 customer reports at least three days late.??

Again, taking good notes in a performance log will help you present these specifics.

5. Remember the ABCs of giving feedback

A ? Accurate. Offer objective, concrete examples, backed by your performance log notes. Avoid words like ?always? and ?never?; they?re exaggerations and don?t usually reflect realistic frequency.

B - Business-oriented. Focus on the business reasons for the corrective comments. Stay away from personality critiques.?

C- Consistent. Remember to provide regular feedback throughout the year.? Don?t dump it all on the employee at performance review time. Consistency is the key to improving performance.

Green Blog: Will Seismic Blasts Upend Atlantic Marine Life?

As a federal decision draws near, environmental and commercial fishing groups are marshaling their forces to protest a plan by the Obama administration to allow seismic airgun testing for oil and gas exploration off the Atlantic coast.

The Interior Department has signaled that it would reach a final decision early next year on whether to approve a draft environmental assessment that would help lay the groundwork for such testing along the coasts of seven states, from the northern tip of Delaware to central Florida.

The environmental and fishing groups argue that noise from the seismic blasts could disrupt the lives of marine animals that rely on sound to travel, feed, mate, and communicate and could lead to the beachings and deaths of whales.

So far the department?s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has received more than 29,000 public comments related to ?petitions opposing the seismic tests. ?If they receive an environmental impact statement that says ?go for it,? they could start in 2013,? warned Matthew Huelsenbeck, a marine scientist for the environmental organization Oceana. ?This is coming down to the wire.?

In its draft environmental assessment, the federal bureau predicts that seismic testing would result in some ?harassments? of marine animals that could result in injuries or in a few cases, deaths. Still, in accordance with the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act, the ?government?s plan calls for mitigation efforts like barring testing in certain areas during critical feeding and breeding periods of the endangered north Atlantic right whale.

Over all, the bureau?s assessment projects that impacts on marine life from the testing would be moderate.

Still, the agency has said that if it determines that the risks to wildlife are too great, the testing will not be carried out. ?Protecting the environment is also what we do here, while safeguarding the development of America?s offshore energy,? said John Filostrat, a bureau spokesman.

The testing by geophysical companies would end a moratorium of more than two decades on oil exploration along the Eastern seaboard that President Obama decided to lift in 2010.

The ?tests are to be performed by a vessel that trails evenly spaced hydrophones in its wake as compressed air is blasted downward by the vessel?s airgun. The resulting sound waves, as high as 250 decibels, are far greater than the sound emitted by a jet engine upon takeoff, Oceana notes.

Once the sound waves hit the ocean floor, the hydrophones register echoes that reflect the densities of materials like gas and oil within the seabed.

In an e-mail, a representative of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said that ?surveying techniques had improved considerably in recent decades. The technology will allow the agency to ?update and refine its body of scientific information on the geology of the mid-and South Atlantic regions, informing its decision-making on oil and gas leasing, the agency spokesman said.

Environmentalists and commercial and recreational fishermen are nonetheless concerned about the intensity and frequency of the airgun blasts: they will be fired every few seconds around the clock and can continue for several weeks. The waves ?reverberate around the ocean, and they create this massive acoustic footprint? ?? loud enough to travel thousands of square miles, said Mr. Huelsenbeck of Oceana.

The intensity and reach of the noise will not only ?drive some marine animals away and ?disrupt their feeding patterns, Oceana ?argues, but could damage or destroy their hearing. This is particularly worrisome for whales, which do not have sharp eyesight and
depend heavily on their hearing. Without it, ?they can?t navigate, they can?t function,? Mr. Huelsenbeck said. ?They keep contact with others based on their calls.?

Animals like whales decline slowly once their hearing is gone, making it difficult to link a death ?directly with the seismic tests, he added.

Oceana also points to seismic testing conducted in 2001 off Sakhalin Island in Russia that was associated with the departure of endangered gray whales from a primary feeding area.

In other cases, the connection between seismic testing and effects on animals is less certain, as with the mass beaching of 900 long-beaked common dolphins and porpoises in Peru this year. The government ruled out the sound waves as a cause, but a marine veterinarian and conservationist who examined many of the corpses found bleeding and fractures in the middle ear ? the type of trauma that could result from intense noise.

Beyond environmental concerns, the ocean expanse ?also supports an annual $11.8 billion dollar fishing industry. Oceana has helped to mobilize opposition from fishing associations that worry that the sonic blasts could displace commercially valuable fish stocks or damage eggs and larvae.

5 Popular Dog Breeds for Big Families ? Eagle Hardware Farm ...

5 Popular Dog Breeds for Big Families

BigFamilyDog 5 Popular Dog Breeds for Big FamiliesHaving a big family means lots of action within the household. There are always people coming and going as well as loud noises and objects falling. While some of the objects, such as food, can be delightful to a dog, others like heavy, clanging objects, can be disturbing.
Here is a list of five popular breeds ? four sporting dogs and one hound ? that often love the action of large families:

  • Labrador Retriever
  • Golden Retriever
  • Irish Setter
  • Springer Spaniel
  • Beagle

?

Sporting Dogs Love Sports

Most children are often very active, and sporting breeds tend to thrive in this situation. Even better, they have a tendency to be natural retrievers, and can delight children for hours with games of fetch. These breeds also love the water and will join in on water games such as running through sprinklers, splashing through wading pools and swimming in a river or lake.

Beagles are not actually listed in the American Kennel Club registry as a Sporting breed; they are a Hound breed, but they also tend to thrive in a large family as they get lots of attention and adore being with people. For families who live in cramped quarters, a smaller dog, such as a Beagle, might be easier to have around.

Attention-loving Dogs

Retrievers, Setters and Beagles can never seem to get enough attention. This is perfect for a large family as there is always someone around to scratch their backs and bellies, or sleep next to. These breeds tend to be patient and forgiving with young children, while also enjoying the high activity of teens and adults.

Mix ?Em Up

Sporting dog mixes such as Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Lab/Shepherd mixes and even Lab/Rottweiler mixes are great with large families, too. With these mixes, you should have a dog who is great with all family members.

Easy Going

Another great facet with these breeds and breed mixes is they?re intelligent and eager to please. This makes training them quick and easy, though the training methods should always be positive as they can be sensitive to harsh treatment.
Most dogs thoroughly enjoy attention and activity, but not all dogs can thrive in the fast paced environment of a large family. Research for yourself what breed will be best for your large family!

Trouble With Online Marketing? Follow These Suggestions! | Eric ...

Some companies are able to last for years as modest but successful enterprises, and some are destined to grow into huge corporations. Even more, though, are destined to vanish. A large percentage of all businesses, including online businesses, fail. This article is designed specifically to prevent this from happening to you, by providing you with valuable Internet promotion tips.

Assess the overall effectiveness of your online marketing efforts by using tech tools to measure the conversion of site visitors to paying customers. For example, there are a number of airline corporations that now have a number of trackers which can compare the amount of visitors against sales and customers who come back repeatedly.

Integrate links into your site which contain valuable keywords. You want to do everything you can to make sure people spend plenty of time on your site, including providing links to other pages. Consumers spend more time on sites that use internal linking; this also has a favorable effect on your site?s search rankings.

TIP! You already have all of the tools that you need in order to be successful with internet marketing. All you need to have is you.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products they?d like to see. Retain your site structure along with providing a variety of unique content.

If you plan on having a flashy website then you need to make sure that it is easy to navigate as well. When a person visits your site, you have less than five seconds of time to grab their attention, before they decide to leave and check out another site. Anything longer than this period of time, and they will move onto something else.

Website marketing takes a lot of work and research. Choose a trusted mentor that you admire online. There are many out there that can give you a fresh perspective for either free or at a small cost. Chose a system that is going to work for you, and give it a solid effort. The system may not show results right away, but it will pay off in the long run.

TIP! A great marketing strategy is to offer bulk discounts on products. If your customer can save money through purchasing items in quantity, they often will.

To boost your site traffic and optimize your site for search engines, you absolutely must have unique, original and fresh content. Unique content will set you apart from your competitors. If you include descriptions of the product and use a lot keywords you can succeed.

Use ?guaranteed? in your ads and content to help boost your web marketing strategy. The word ?guaranteed? implies that you stand behind your products, and this inspires confidence in new customers. A guarantee makes people more comfortable about risking their hard-earned cash since their level of trust in you has risen with the inclusion of the offer.

Take into consideration the different methods available for advertising your website. Excellent sources of advertising your site include blog promotion, posting to them, and hanging around all the social networking sites. There are a lot different tactics to draw business. Creativity is key when trying to gain customers.

TIP! One very helpful tool is a 500 error page that is user-friendly. This occurs when someone tries to access a page with broken code.

Keeping your finger on the emotional pulse of your intended audience regarding online activities and promotions is crucial to your ability to design successful market strategies in the future. When you decide to launch a promotion or an online event for your company, consider how people respond by reading about it on forums and blogs. Respond to the advice by making changes next time. People are always happy when their concerns are addressed.

Learn from others? mistakes and make their failure work to your advantage. Start implementing some of the ideas presented in this article today and be on your way to becoming a very successful Internet marketer

Noah Kagan, Facebook employee no. 30, describes pain of being sacked from firm

By Hugo Gye

|

Being fired from any job is always a traumatic experience.

But for Noah Kagan, one of Facebook's first ever employees, being let go was even more of a blow.

By being forced to leave the up-and-coming social network in 2006, the unfortunate manager missed out on a payday which could have totalled $100million.

Mr Kagan, who is now running online startup AppSumo, was the 30th employee at Facebook when he was hired by founder Mark Zuckerberg as a product manager.

Fired: Noah Kagan, pictured left when he worked for Facebook and right earlier this year, has written of his anguish in being sacked from the burgeoning social network back in 2006

At the time, the firm was a scrappy newcomer - Mr Kagan says: 'Most decisions were me walking over to Mark's desk for approval'.

And many employees were deeply devoted to the company - not least the young project manager who had graduated from Berkeley two years earlier.

?

'Facebook was my entire life,' he writes in the blog post explaining how he came to be fired. 'My social circle, my validation, my identity and everything was tied to this company.'

Mr Kagan also pays tribute to his fellow employees, most of whom were graduates of - or dropouts from - elite Ivy League universities.

'I've NEVER been around such smart people,' he says. 'I've never felt so consistent like I wasn't the smartest person in the room.'

Fun: This image of Mark Zuckerberg and his future wife Priscilla Chan was taken by Mr Kagan in his Facebook days

Fun: Mark Zuckerberg and his future wife Priscilla Chan in a picture taken by Mr Kagan in his Facebook days

Silly: But the product manager was completely devoted to his job at Facebook in 2005-6

Silly: But the product manager was completely devoted to his job at Facebook in 2005-6

However, while he may have been enjoying his time at Facebook, the young hotshot was apparently not always the most popular figure in the room.

'I wanted attention, I put myself before Facebook,' he says. 'I hosted events at the office, published things on this blog to get attention and used the brand more than I added to it.'

Moreover, as the firm grew, it changed from an entrepreneurial organisation to more of a bureaucratic behemoth - and Mr Kagan failed to change with it.

He writes on his blog of his frustration at having to go through a secretary every time he wanted to see Mr Zuckerberg, and admits that in big meetings he 'zoned the f*** out'.

Excitement: But Facebook's shares have continued to tumble since its landmark IPO in May

Excitement: Facebook's IPO this year could have netted Mr Kagan $100million if he had stayed at the firm

But the last straw was when Facebook changed its membership policy to allow non-students to have accounts, and Mr Kagan leaked the information to a journalist.

While partying at the Coachella festival, he emailed a contact asking him to publicise the information as soon as the change was made the next day - but the journalist wrote a story on it that same night.

Mr Kagan was called in for a meeting with Matt Cohler, then Facebook's head of product management, and told that he had become a 'liability' to the company after eight months working there.

He was marched back to the office, where he had his telephone and computer taken away.

At the time he was devastated, and he now claims that it took him a year to get over the pain of rejection.

You might think that that pain would only have got worse over the years, as Facebook grew and this year's IPO turned many of its earliest employees into multi-millionaires.

Yet even though he estimates he could have earned $100million if he had stayed at the company, Mr Kagan insists he has no regrets.

Having worked at web firms such as Mint.com and KickFlip before starting AppSumo, he says of his departure from Facebook: 'It is what it is.

'Ultimately, I appreciate where I am now and all the experiences I got from NOT being there.'

Survey shows China manufacturing contracting

(AP) ? China's manufacturing contracted again in September but improved from the previous month in a possible sign an economic slowdown is bottoming out.

An industry group, the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, said Monday its monthly purchasing managers' index stood at 49.8 points on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction. That was up 0.6 points from August's numbers and the first improvement in four months.

The data added to signs China's deepest economic downturn since the 2008 global crisis might be stabilizing but officials including President Hu Jintao have warned conditions might deteriorate further before growth rebounds.

China's economic growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in June. That is strong by Western standards but has hurt Chinese manufacturers and construction companies that depend on high growth.

Analysts are forecasting a turnaround late this year or in early 2013 but have pushed back their time frame due to weakness in key European and U.S. export markets. They say a Chinese recovery is likely to be too weak to drive a global rebound without improvement in developed economies.

Some forecasters point to higher bank lending in recent months as a sign of an impending uptick in growth but other indicators have yet to show improvement.

A separate PMI released Saturday by HSBC Corp. showed activity rose slightly to 47.9 on a similar 100-point scale, still showing a contraction but improved from August's 47.6.

China's slowdown is due largely to government lending and investment curbs imposed to cool inflation and steer rapid growth to a more manageable level, but the country also has been hurt by the unexpectedly sharp decline in export demand.

The government has cut interest rates twice since June and is pumping money into the economy through higher investment by state companies and more spending on building subways and other public works. But authorities are moving more cautiously than they did after the 2008 crisis, when the huge stimulus that helped China rebound also fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

The logistics federation said the production component of its index improved to 51.3, up 0.4 points from August. It said clothing, auto manufacturing, food-processing, electronics and some other industries showed activity expanding. Steel production, metal fabrication and equipment manufacturing contracted.

New export orders rose 2.2 points from August's level to 48.8, though that still showed a contraction.
