University Inventions Earned $1.8-Billion in 2011 - The Chronicle of Higher Education

[This article originally contained several numerical errors that have now been corrected. Details on those corrections appear below.]

Universities and their inventors earned more than $1.8-billion from commercializing their academic research in the 2011 fiscal year, collecting royalties from new breeds of wheat, from a new drug for the treatment of HIV, and from longstanding arrangements over enduring products like Gatorade.

Northwestern University earned the most of any institution reporting, with more than $191-million in licensing income.

The 157 universities that responded to the annual survey of the Association of University Technology Managers, released on Monday, completed 5,398 licenses and filed for 12,090 new patents. They also created 617 start-up companies.

The overall revenue figures are about the same as in the 2010 fiscal year, when 155 universities responded. The number of licenses and options completed in 2011 was notably higher than the 4,735 reported in 2010, but in part that was because some institutions began to include more of them in their totals. The number of new patent applications filed was also higher.

The totals include data from four institutions that answered anonymously and are not included in the sortable table that accompanies this article. (Year-to-year comparisons for the survey are imperfect because, in some years, institutions that are the most active in patenting and licensing don't participate. Also some participating institutions provide only partial responses.)

The 617 start-up companies formed in 2011 was a slight increase from the 613 reported in the previous year. Start-up companies appeared to be a growing focus for some of the institutions in the survey. In 2010, 12 institutions reported forming 10 or more companies; in 2011, 14 institutions did so.

That attention reflects broader economic forces, says Tony Stanco, executive director of the National Council on Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer. With big corporations doing less and less hiring, there is "more of an awareness from students and faculty that entrepreneurship is a growing career path, a growing alternative," he says. And says Mr. Stanco, new Ph.D. recipients now realize that one way to continue their research is "though the venture path."

'Off the Beaten Path'

The University of Florida's David Day says licensing inventions to start-ups also makes sense for institutions like his, which still collects revenue from the trademark it holds on the Gatorade sports drink and related products. "We're a little off the beaten path," so the homegrown approach is a logical one, says Mr. Day, director of Florida's Office of Technology Licensing.

Florida, which formed 12 start-up companies in 2011, is also investing in facilities and programs to help incubate new companies and foster innovation, including plans for a privately financed 180-room residence hall, nicknamed the "Dormcupator," for students interested in entrepreneurship.

Lesley Millar, director of the Office of Technology Management at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, says the focus on entrepreneurship at her institution is one reason for the big jump in the number of start-up companies formed there.

The campus, combined with the University of Illinois at Chicago, reported 21 new start-up companies in 2011, including Nuvixa, which is developing audio-visual conferencing technology, and the Xerion Advanced Battery Corporation, which uses nanotechnology to create fast-charging batteries for cars and electronic devices. In 2010 the two institutions created just eight companies.

Urbana-Champaign now has five entrepreneurs-in-residence "to provide very early guidance to faculty" on forming start-up companies, says Ms. Millar. It continues this "sequential" support for start-ups through the early stages of commercialization, including access to investment capital through a fund called Illinois Ventures. "That was missing 10 years ago," she says.

The Illinois campuses also saw an increase in overall licensing income, from $13.4-million in 2010 to $17.4-million in 2011, in part due to growing sales of an HIV drug called Prezista, developed at Chicago.

As in past years, a few institutions accounted for a large proportion of universities' overall licensing income: Northwestern's $191.5-million accounted for more than 10 percent of the total reported. Its revenue, combined with four other $100-million-plus earners?the 10-campus University of California system, and Columbia, New York, and Princeton Universities?accounts for more than 40 percent of the total.

Of the 153 colleges and universities that responded publicly to the latest survey, 23 reported annual licensing income of $15-million or more; in 2010, 22 institutions reported that much. (In a news release, the technology managers' association reports cumulative data for not only the universities but also for a technology-investment firm and 28 hospitals and research organizations that responded to its survey.)

New Strains of Wheat

One newcomer to the list of big earners was the University of Nebraska. Its revenue from licensing grew from just over $3.7-million in 2010 to more than $16.7-million in 2011.

"A big part of it," says David Conrad, executive director of NUTech Ventures, the nonprofit corporation that manages inventions for the University of Nebraska, was the result of a research relationship the campus at Lincoln formed in December 2010 with Bayer Crop Science.

The German company is working with the university to generate new varieties of wheat that can be sold throughout Europe and other markets where genetically modified crops are not welcome. Some of that work has already produced new strains of wheat which are being sold.

Mr. Conrad says NUTech Ventures is also benefiting from what he calls "a relationship-based model for tech transfer" with the goal of working with licensees so they'll become repeat customers. He says the corporation tries to attract licensees with good service, not below-market prices. "Some of those companies have already come back to do subsequent deals," he says.

Nebraska is also working to encourage more of its faculty and students to make a great effort to identify possible new inventions and disclose them to NUTech Ventures. Four years ago, the invention-disclosure rate for the university was about 60 a year, he says. Now it's more like 160 a year.

"The faculty are much more engaged in tech transfer," he says, "and the students are much more engaged."

Cornell University reported a notable uptick in the number of licenses signed, with 162 in 2011. Some of that increase, from 37 in 2010, resulted from counting more of its smaller licenses than before, Cornell officials say.

It also reflects a new approach. The university is offering more of its technologies on a nonexclusive basis, and it is also making a conscious effort to sign more deals, even if that means forgoing upfront payments, being less demanding about royalty rates, and forgoing other "short-term economic benefits" for the sake of getting deals done, says Alan Paau, Cornell's vice provost for technology transfer and economic development.

"We know not every deal is going to be a success," he says, but the institution is now more willing to take a chance. "We're more promiscuous now."

Carmen Mendoza and Josh Keller contributed to this article.

Corrections (8/28/2012, 5:42 p.m.): Because of miscalculations of data provided by the Association of University Technology Managers, this article originally misreported several totals of universities' activity in areas measured by the group's survey. Total licensing revenue in 2011 was more than $1.8-billion, not more than $1.4-billion. Total number of licenses completed was 5,398, not 4,082. Total patent filings were 12,090, not 9,662. Total start-up companies formed were 617, not 482. Total participants in the survey were 157, including four anonymously, not 153. As a result of the recalculations, the 2011 totals did not lag behind the 2010 totals but were about the same. And the five institutions that earned at least $100-million accounted for more than 40 percent of the total, not more than half. This article and the accompanying table showing tallies for individual universities have been updated to reflect these corrections.

Study finds that millennials change jobs every two years

A study conducted by PayScale Inc. and Millennial Branding found that U.S. millennials, or those between the ages of 18 and 30, switch jobs every two years on average.

A study conducted by PayScale Inc. and Millennial Branding found that U.S. millennials, or those between the ages of 18 and 30, switch jobs every two years on average.

By comparison, members of "Generation X" typically spend about five years with each employer, and baby boomers spend about seven, according to the report.

The study focuses on millennials, or Generation Y, and among its findings are that millennials are most highly concentrated within companies with fewer than 100 employees (47 percent), followed by companies with between 100 and 1,500 employees (30 percent). It also purports that millennials are more adverse to large companies, and value the freedom that smaller employers with less stringent rules can offer.

"This report confirms that Gen Y is an entrepreneurial group, highly versed in social media, and prefers freedom and flexibility over big corporate policies," said Dan Schawbel, founder of Millennial Branding in a news release. "While they are the future corporate leaders and change-makers, they are suffering in this economy by having to work in retail jobs over professional ones. A bachelor's degree can no longer be traded in for a job."

For diabetics, a steady job is good for your health

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? If you're diabetic or prone to diabetes, having a steady job appears to be good for your health, and not just because of the insurance coverage.

A new University of Michigan study found that that jobless working-age people with diabetes are less likely to adhere to their oral anti-diabetic medications than diabetics who are employed. Further, people of working age with diabetes are more likely to be unemployed than those who do not have diabetes.

The lack of a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationship between insurance and medication adherence surprised lead researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the U-M College of Pharmacy and School of Public Health.

"Improved use of medications is more than just a facet of having medical insurance. It is linked to bigger issues such as being employed, periods of joblessness or a personal financial strain," said Balkrishnan, who believes that a healthier, active lifestyle and access to medical care resources through employers that want employees to remain productive play a big role in adherence.

Other factors that account for lack of medication adherence include lack of financial resources, stress due to unemployment and lack of access to health care.

Researchers looked at diabetes because it is one of the most commonly present chronic conditions in working-age adults in the United States, Balkrishnan said. And globally, diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death and the eighth-most costly disease to treat. In 2007, total health care costs for diabetes were estimated at $174 billion.

Policy changes would help, Balkrishnan said.

"Workforce participation for adults with diabetes and other chronic conditions command the attention of public policymakers, particularly when prioritizing resource allocation," he said. "As a starting position, health care providers and systems need standard processes to identify individuals facing financial pressure and their vulnerability to lower medication adherence."

I'm Limor Fried, and This Is How I Work [Video]

I'm Limor Fried, and This Is How I WorkLimor Fried is an engineer best known for her work at Adafruit Industries, the company she founded in 2005. Adafruit's goals are simple: create the best place online for learning electronics and make the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels. The company sells all kinds of DIY kits, from phone chargers and learning toys to power monitoring systems and art robots. Limor has emerged as a leader of the open-source hardware movement and is a goddess (LadyAda, as they call her) among makers. She was the first to encourage hacking Microsoft's Kinect (even offering a $3,000 prize), and she's fiercely passionate about getting kids to explore science and engineering. Limor talked to us about Adafruit's workshop in New York City, her current projects, and her best productivity tricks. Want to know more? She's chatting live for the next hour!

Update: The q&a is closed. Thanks for all the great questions!

    Name: Limor Fried
    Occupation: Engineer
    Location: New York, NY
Current computer: Shuttle computer with Windows XP and Ubuntu
    Current mobile devices: None
One word that best describes how I work: Engineered

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?

I spend most of my time in CadSoft EAGLE. It's my tool of choice for designing the electronics I create at Adafruit Industries. EAGLE is a PCB (printed circuit board) design software that a lot of engineers use to make the circuit boards you see inside many electronic products. I do open-source hardware and release my designs under a Creative Common ShareAlike, Attribution license so others can improve upon them and learn from the designs. You can check them out on GitHub.

I'm Limor Fried, and This Is How I Work

Above: Time lapse video of Limor routing a PCB in EAGLE.

    What's your workspace setup like?

My desk is covered (some would say littered) with in-progress designs. It takes awhile to get a design right, so I have board revisions, testing jigs, and equipment all over the place. It looks messy, but I could probably find most things blindfolded. I've had this desk for over 10 years, same with the chair that is slightly falling apart, but it's "home." I'm currently working on a few open-source designs for the Rasperry Pi Linux computer.

I'm Limor Fried, and This Is How I Work

Pictured above: Limor working at her desk.

What email app do you use?

Mozilla Thunderbird, open-source. I don't like all my mail in the Googles.

    What's your favorite time-saving trick?

The biggest time-savers I know are: one, take care of food ahead of time. If you can have food set up for a week, you'll save hours and hours. It's also less expensive, but the time savings is where it's at. Two, live close to work. Commuting can take days and weeks away from productive time or rest time. I happen to live and work in the same place, but if that ever changes, I'll always be walking distance away.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

I use my inbox as my to-do list!

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

I don't have a cell phone! I designed a cell phone/GPS/WiFi jammer as part of my thesis at MIT, so I've never wanted or needed a cell phone. I would say the gadget I can't live without is my Metcal MX-500 soldering station. If you're doing SMT (surface mount technology), you're doing rework. So having the right rework tools will save you tons of time, frustration, and money. For my designs I manufacture, I try to aim for about 90% yield off the the pick-and-place (or better) and repair the rest for a total aim of 95% or better. I really liked the Weller irons and used them in school but when it came time to stock the Adafruit lab, I decided to go with Metcal MX-500 on the recommendation of a friend. It was a good recommendation! Metcals are really heavy, durable, and heat up ultra fast.

What do you listen to while you work?

I usually have Pandora running all day. I have noise-canceling headphones since I'm in the factory area and the pick-and-place machines and the laser have ambient noise that gets a little annoying to listen to all day. On Pandora I usually listen to gothy music from the 80s and 90s.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

I would say I'm not good at everyday things?that's why I suppose I wanted to be an engineer! It's hard to remember to eat on time, get laundry done, and all the things I know I should, but the temptation of creating something new always wins out.

What else should Lifehacker readers know about you?

I'd love to get the help of all the Lifehacker readers in making this hacker LEGO set "real." There was a lot of talk about some recent efforts to make "LEGO for girls" so at Adafruit we made a version of my workshop in LEGO. If we get 10,000 votes, LEGO will likely make this "hackerspace/workshop." It's a mini version of my factory here in NYC complete with many of the tools and equipment I use. It would be really cool for young kids to be able to imagine being an engineer or maker with a LEGO set. Vote here!

(AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

(AP) ? A nation at war, crippling joblessness and a looming budget standoff that could wreck the economy have been overshadowed in recent days by an issue that polls show doesn't even crack voters' lists of top 10 concerns: abortion.

Missouri Republican Todd Akin's comment that women who were victims of "legitimate rape" rarely become pregnant touched off furious maneuvering by Republicans and Democrats alike, the latest iteration of a campaign that has been driven by both sides' need to court a small slice of the American electorate. Several hundred thousand independent suburban women will play an outsized role in deciding whether President Barack Obama keeps his job.

The issue reverberated Sunday, on the eve of the Republican convention, as Mitt Romney accused Obama's campaign of sinking to a sad low by trying to link the GOP candidate to Akin's statements about rape and abortion.

Romney also conceded that the controversy is hurting the Republican Party, and GOP chairman Reince Priebus said Akin's insistence about staying in the Missouri Senate race could cost the party its shot at winning control of the Senate in November.

"It really is sad, isn't it, with all the issues that America faces for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level," Romney said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

Romney's comments were in response to Obama's contention that the Republican candidate has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected president.

"I don't think that if Congress presented him with some of the items that are in the Republican platform at this convention that would, for example, entirely roll back women's control over their reproductive health, that he would stand in the way," Obama said in an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday.

The charges and countercharges reflect an ongoing political skirmish that shows no signs of letting up about two months before Election Day.

While suburban women are always a sought-after demographic in presidential campaigns ? 10 million more women than men voted in 2008 ? both sides agree that this campaign has been marked by an unusual intensity of debate over women's issues, particularly reproductive rights.

Both sides have clashed this year over Romney's calls to end federal funding of Planned Parenthood, Republican demands to let some employers avoid covering workers' birth control costs and a Democratic political operative's chastising of Romney's wife for being a housewife.

Polling data is mixed and hotly debated over whether the abortion issue helps candidates who favor abortion rights or those who oppose them. But Tony Robinson, a political science professor at the University of Colorado, Denver, said that Republicans are in peril this time because the stances they are now talking about ? like banning abortion in cases of rape or restricting birth control ? are ones that are widely unpopular.

"Whatever party is driven to its most extreme positions on this is punished by the electorate," Robinson said.

Democrats and some independent analysts say Republicans kicked off the debate by tacking hard to the right during the GOP primary.

"Rick Santorum is really the person they have to blame for this attention now," said Jennifer Lawless, director of the Women and Politics Institute at American University, referring to the former Pennsylvania senator and strong abortion foe, who fought to pull social conservatives away from Romney during the primary.

In the hours after Akin's comments, Democrats leapt at the chance to link him to the Republican presidential ticket ? almost as quickly as Romney, his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, and other prominent conservatives ? scrambled to condemn the remarks.

Democrats noted that Ryan had co-sponsored a controversial bill of Akin's that they contended would redefine rape, announced a list of abortion rights activists as speakers at their upcoming convention and a weeklong national swing of female surrogates dubbed the "Romney/Ryan: Wrong for Women" tour.

Meanwhile, Republicans, who have their own women-heavy lineup of convention speakers, defended their inclusion of a plank in their party platform outlawing abortion in the case of rape.

Colorado is one of the most competitive presidential states, where pollsters estimate about 100,000 undecided voters ? the majority of whom are female ? will decide the race. Both campaigns are fighting hard in the state for the women's vote.

The Romney campaign holds weekly women's phone banks, where female volunteers gather to call other women and urge them to back the Republican ticket. The Obama campaign holds meetings, house parties and canvasses for women, and has television ads attacking Romney's stance on reproductive rights in heavy rotation.

During a campaign visit earlier this month, Obama was introduced by Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who was called a "slut" by Rush Limbaugh for her prepared testimony to a Senate committee that health insurance should cover birth control.

"When it comes to a woman's right to make her own health care choices," Obama said of his opponents, "they want to take us back to policies better suited to the 1950s than the 21st century. Colorado, you have to make sure it doesn't happen."

On Thursday, in an interview with a Denver television station, Romney was quickly asked how he would close the gender gap that persistently shows women favoring Obama.

"I think the issues women care about are the issues that our campaign is focused on ? which is, Number One, making sure that women and their kids and other members of their family are able to have good jobs," he said.

Analysts say both candidates face risks.

Romney needs only look to the last competitive election in Colorado, when Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet defied the 2010 GOP landslide by eking a narrow victory over his Republican opponent, Ken Buck.

Bennet painted his opponent as insensitive to women's issues while a debate also raged over a statewide ballot measure to grant legal rights to a fertilized egg. It was overwhelmingly defeated by a 70-30 percent margin but is returning to the ballot in November. Democrats here have eagerly noted that Ryan sponsored a similar bill in Congress.

Veteran Colorado pollster Floyd Ciruli said Obama must be careful not to look "extreme" in his use of reproductive issues, but that he's been lucky because Republicans keep bringing them up on their own.

Ciruli said the women swing voters the president is targeting "love politics to be above politics. They love for all of us to be together. They can be very put off by narrow appeals."

Both sides note that Obama's pitch on women's issues may also rally his sometimes disaffected base ? just as critical in a nail-biter race where few have yet to choose sides. Indeed, on a recent morning in this key swing suburb, every one of a half-dozen women interviewed on the contest had already made up her mind.

Colleen Faust, a 70-year-old retired teacher and Democrat, recalled writing a paper about a woman's right to birth control when she graduated college in 1965. "I grew up in pre-Roe v. Wade and I don't trust the Republicans," she said, referring to the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.

Cherie Harris, 48, a self-identified strong conservative who owns a firearms and self-defense business, scoffed at arguments about women's health issues. "That's a big smoke screen," she said. "My 21 and 22-year-olds, how're they going to be able to find jobs? That's what I worry about as a woman."

Student Loan Debt: Federal Grants for Debt Relief

Students who took out federal loans to fund their education enjoy several exclusive privileges that are otherwise absent in private loans. For instance, federal student loans come with a predetermined interest rate and provide debtor safety. Moreover, these loans also have the provisions to grant deferment and forbearance, in case a student defaults on loan payment due to sudden financial crisis. However, it should be noted that students with Parent Plus loans or Perkins Loan cannot opt for the debt consolidation programs sponsored by the government, which are meant for other federal student loans.

For that reason, the government has developed a slew of debt relief programs that can help a student debtor to pay off his/her debt easily.

Students should be aware of the student loan repayment procedures that will help them to build their finances on a firm ground. Some of the debt payment plans have been discussed below:

    1. Fixed-interest rate payment plan ? This is also known as ?Standard Repayment? plan. Under this plan, monthly payment amount payable by the student borrowers are preset. The monthly loan payment amount will be of $50 minimum. Moreover, the loan repayment term will be of maximum 10 years. People who can manage high monthly payment amount will find this plan most suitable for themselves.
    2. Adjustable-interest rate payment plan ? This kind of student loan repayment plan is formally referred to as ?Income-Contingent Repayment? or ICR plan. As per the plan?s rule, a married student?s earnings (also considering spousal income), strength of the immediate family, followed by the sum total of all the direct loans will be taken into consideration to decide whether or not a student is eligible for the program. However, borrowers are immune from proving their financial instability to be eligible for this repayment plan. Payments are decided annually, after the analysis of a student?s financial health. This program is of maximum 25 years and hence one will be paying extra over this long repayment period. It is good to note that after 25 years of loan payments, the left-over loan balance will be forgiven.
    3. Financial hardship payment plan ? The official name of this plan is ?Income-Based Repayment? or IBR plan. Students who have fallen into financial turmoil for the time being can take advantage of this plan. Under the IBR plan, students are allowed to make reduced payments over a greater duration that stretches up to a maximum period of 25 years. Those students, who make regular approved payments for 25 years, will have their remaining loan balance waived-off by the government.

To be eligible for this plan, a student?s gross earnings, family strength and financial status (or poverty line) are evaluated to derive his/her disposable income. Therefore, a student?s outstanding balance under the standard repayment plan should be 15% higher than derived disposable income.

Finally, it should be noted that IBR and ICR are granted to borrowers of both Parent Direct Plus loan as well as Direct Plus Loan. On the other hand, ?Standard Repayment? plan is granted to only Parent Direct Plus loan borrowers.

Exclusive: Startup Launch Ruined By Careless Blogger

picard-facepalm.jpg (921?606)Last night I attended an event for a local startup that was very excited about an upcoming product launch and coming out of beta, making its service openly available to everyone. The official launch was scheduled for and embargoed until next Tuesday, but the event was meant as a celebration and an opportunity for writers to get a more in-depth look at the service, meet the founders, and talk to some of its users. There was beer and wine and a little bit of food. There was cake. Somebody drove a car with a pink moustache on the front into the middle of the office and some people hopped out and talked about their experiences with users. It was a joyous occasion, a time for everyone to relax and celebrate all the hard work they had been putting into it, to breathe a little, let loose. Then, an hour later, someone posted about the event and the upcoming launch, and shit went sideways.

Women with Alzheimer?s deteriorate faster than men

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Women with Alzheimer's show worse mental deterioration than men with the disease, even when at the same stage of the condition, according to researchers from the University of Hertfordshire.

In the paper published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, the researchers discovered that men with Alzheimer's consistently and significantly performed better than women with the disease across the five cognitive areas they examined. Most remarkably, the verbal skills of women with Alzheimer's are worse when compared to men with the disease, which is a striking difference to the profile for the healthy population where females have a distinct advantage.

The researchers led by Professor Keith Laws completed a meta-analysis of neurocognitive data from fifteen published studies, which revealed a consistent male advantage on verbal and visuospatial tasks, and tests of both episodic1 and semantic2 memory.

Keith Laws, Professor of psychology, said: "Unlike mental decline associated with normal aging, something about Alzheimer's specifically disadvantages women.

"There has been some previous, but limited, evidence that females with Alzheimer's deteriorate faster than males in the earlier stages of the disease. And possible explanations are for a hormonal influence, possibly due to oestrogen loss in women or perhaps a greater cognitive reserve in males which provides protection against the disease process. But further studies to examine sex differences with the disease are needed to provide greater clarity on these issues."

Further analysis of the study data showed that age, education level and dementia severity did not explain the advantage that men with the disease have over women with the disease.

Alzheimer's disease, a common progressive condition affecting memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion, is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer's Disease International estimates that there are currently thirty million people in the world with dementia, with 4.6 million new cases every year. The incidence of Alzheimer's is greater among women than men, with the difference increasing with age.

1Episodic memory -- our ability to recall specific events of our own past, accompanied by the feeling of remembering.

2Semantic memory -- other knowledge that we acquire which is purely factual without any personal feeling or history attached.

Only 2 percent of Canadians deny climate change

Canadians overwhelmingly believe in climate change

Regina, August 15, 2012 Only two per cent of Canadians believe climate change is not occurring, a new important survey released today by IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. concluded.

The survey comes on the heels of Alberta Premier Alison Redford's recent push for a National Energy Strategy, which would address the future of Canada's oil and gas industries, and its approach to carbon management.

"Our survey indicates that Canadians from coast to coast overwhelmingly believe climate change is real and is occurring, at least in part due to human activity" explained Dr. Carmen Dybwad, CEO of the environmental non-government organization. "These findings have been consistent from 2011 and 2012. Canadians care about issues like extreme weather, drought and climate change."

Opinions about the cause of climate change and how to combat it are, however, sharply divided among the provinces and by region.

"Canadians most commonly (54%) believe that climate change is occurring partially due to human activity and partially due to natural climate variation," said Briana Brownell of Insightrix Research, who conducted the survey for IPAC-CO2.

"Residents of Quebec (44 %), Atlantic Canada (34%) and British Columbia (32 %) are more likely to believe climate change is occurring due to human activity than those on the Prairies (Alberta and Saskatchewan 21 %, Manitoba 24 %)."

Canadians are also divided on what they believe should be the priorities to fight climate change.

A total of 35% of Canadians believe the priority should be to promote cleaner cars running on electricity or low-carbon fuels while only 13% favored a tax on carbon dioxide emissions from the whole economy. Support for a carbon tax is lowest in B.C. (6%) and highest in Quebec (24%).

A key solution cited by Canadians is Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS, which involves capturing carbon dioxide from an industrial source of greenhouse gases, transporting it, and storing it deep in the Earth's subsurface.

A majority of Canadians agree that capturing and storing carbon dioxide should be compulsory when building a new coal (59%) or natural gas (57%) power plant, though Canadians are concerned about the risks associated with CCS.

Quebec residents (71%) would be the most concerned if carbon dioxide was stored underground within 1.5 kilometres to 3 kilometres from their home, while Saskatchewan residents (43%) were the least worried.

Residents of B.C. (60%) are most likely to believe that the storage of carbon dioxide represents a safety risk in the future. Again, Saskatchewan residents (48%) are significantly less likely to hold this belief.

"CCS is not the "magic bullet" solution to combat climate change, but the development of CCS technology represents a necessary step in reducing Canada's emissions," said Dr. Dybwad.

For a second consecutive year, IPAC-CO2 contracted Insightrix Research, Inc. to conduct an online survey of Canadian residents. Survey responses were collected from 1,550 Canadians between May 29 and June 11.

The percentage of Canadians who are unsure whether or not they would benefit from CCS has increased notably from 42% in 2011 to 48% in 2012.

Residents of Ontario are more likely to believe that it would (33%) benefit them, while in Quebec the reverse is true, where 30% believe they would not benefit from the technology.

The proportion of Canadians who are unsure of the effectiveness of carbon capture and storage has increased notably from one quarter (24%) in 2011 to one third (35%) in 2012.

Despite the concerns many Canadians have about the technology, Dr. Dybwad remained optimistic about the future of CCS and its impact on Canada's environment.

"Canadians are concerned about the risks and benefits involved with CCS, but IPAC-CO2 exists to ensure that carbon dioxide is stored safely and permanently in the ground by providing risk and performance assessments of carbon dioxide storage projects."
